    Just a short distance away is the historial Gillette Castle where you can tour the stone halls of the past where Sherlock Holmes came alive through the writing of William Gillette.  Gillette Castle State Park - East Haddam Connecticut - medieval Castles CT

    As you stand on the terrace of Gillette's Castle you have the beautiful view of the Connecticut River.  You cannot help but notice the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry bringing passengers across the Connecticut river.  In older times the cost was three pence for a man and horse and now a mere $2.25 for a car and 75 cents for each passenger will allow you to see the elegance of the river before you .http://chesterct.com/ferry.htm

   After taking your voyage across the river, you may decide to take a walk through Johnsonville, which is an industrial village. Although closed to the public, you can still appreciate its wealth of history and beauty.  Johnsonville, East Haddam CT

    If you come into town from the west side of the Connecticut River, http://www.connix.com/~crm/delaney.htm#crconn you will undoubtedly cross over the East Haddam Swing bridge which is one of the oldest and longest turnstile bridges in the country.

    When you are in town and you hear an unearthly noise, don't be too alarmed it has been happening here since Native American times.  The name Moodus, one of the villages in East Haddam, was derived from the Native American word "Morehemoodus" or places of noise.  These noises are caused by unknown seismic phenomenon which occurs near Mt. Tom where the Salmon and Moodus Rivers flow together.  The noises have awed and confounded all who have heard them throughout the years.
