When did Child Labor begin?

Child labor has been around for centuries.  However, it was during the second industrial period (Civil War through the beginning of the 20th century) that the western world has identified child labor as being unacceptable. Interviews taken from workers living during the Victorian Era in England describe how difficult life was.  The Working and Living Conditions for the children were often just as bad as the adults.  Lewis Hine took many Photographs that recorded the working and living conditions of American children who had to work in canneries, factories, on the street as peddlers and paperboys, and in many other places.  Many of Lewis Hines's pictures can now be seen in Museums and also show life of the working class.  You can click HERE! if you want to read more about child labor during the industrial period.
Although many people were important in lobbying for child labor laws, the "newsies" (the child newspaper carriers in New York during the turn of the century) were a group of children and young adults who played a large part in getting laws passed for better working conditions for children and young adults.
